Local Food for Healthy Communities - A Conversation with Kathleen Merrigan

I get to see lots of inspiring speakers in my job, talking about education, philanthropy, the arts, the environment, social capital, and the whole range of things that make life good. Recently, I heard a great speaker on the topic of local food, food security, sustainability, and healthy eating. Our Food and Farm Initiative brought Kathleen Merrigan, the former Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), to join us at a gathering at Vermont Youth Conservation Corps’ Monitor Barn in Richmond on October 24. Kathleen spoke to around 60 philanthropists and community leaders about her work with the USDA, but even more about the importance of the food movement in America, and the critical nature of Vermont’s leadership in that movement. Rather than recapping her comments, I thought you might like to watch her yourself. So in this post, rather than me, you get to listen to her.
